Cande Care & Safety

A Little Love Goes a Long Way

Your Gaia candle is made to be enjoyed slowly — and with just a few gentle habits, it'll reward you with a cleaner, longer, more even burn every single time. Think of this less as a rulebook and more as the care card we'd tuck into your box with a smile. Here's how to get the most out of every glow.

🕯️ Step One — The First Burn Sets the Tone

The very first time you light your candle matters more than any other. Soy wax has a memory, and that first burn teaches it how to melt.

  • Let it burn long enough for the wax to melt completely to the edge of the container — usually 2 to 3 hours.
  • This creates a full, even "wax pool" across the whole surface.
  • It's the secret to a long-lived candle, and it's what keeps yours from tunneling — burning straight down the middle and leaving good wax stranded on the sides.

In short: give the first burn time, and the whole candle thanks you.

✂️ Step Two — Trim Before You Light

The single easiest habit for a clean, beautiful flame: mind the wick.

  • For every consecutive burn, keep the wick trimmed to about 1/8 inch.
  • Simply pinch off any ash or burnt top before relighting — gently, once the candle has fully cooled.
  • A tidy wick means a steadier flame, less smoke, and cleaner air — the whole reason we're here.

Little pinch, big difference.

🔥 A Word About Your Wood Wick

If your candle has a wood wick, here's what to expect — because it behaves a little differently than a cotton one, and beautifully so.

  • It creates a soothing, crackling wide flame — like a fireplace, scaled down to your nightstand.
  • It's completely natural for the flame to dip in and out as it settles.
  • It can take a few re-lights for the wick to fully catch. That's normal, not a flaw — give it a moment and it'll find its glow.

⏳ Know When to Say Goodnight

More burn time isn't better — there's a sweet spot.

  • Enjoy your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
  • Beyond that, the wick can drift, the flame can grow, and the jar can overheat.
  • Let the candle cool completely before relighting (and trim that wick again before you do).

🏡 Where It Loves to Live

A candle is happiest — and safest — in the right spot.

  • Always burn on a steady, heat-proof surface.
  • Keep it away from anything flammable — curtains, books, bedding, greenery, or anything that may catch fire.
  • Keep well out of reach of curious children and pets.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and always fully extinguish before leaving the room or going to sleep.

💛 One Last Thing

When there's about ½ inch of wax left, it's time to retire that candle and clean up the jar. (Give it a second life — an empty Gaia jar is lovely for holding jewelry, matches, or a little bunch of dried flowers.)
